Our staff is here to provide a variety of high-resolution scanning services. We have equipment capable of scanning both film and reflective materials such as illustrations, documents, photographs, and more. You may also schedule a DIY appointment to use our scanners for your own work.

FILM Scanning

LATITUDE is happy to now offer three different film scanning options across three pieces of equipment! These scan types offer different capabilities to suit a variety of scanning needs - feel free to give us a call and we will help you find the right process for your project.

$7.50 per scan

FLatbed Film Scans

  • Epson Perfection V850 Pro Scanner: 9.5"x11" scanning bed, Maximum Optical Resolution of 6400 dpi.

    • Automatic, In-scanner negative inversion / color interpretation / crop

    • Automated dust removal

    • Film edge can not be included


Reflective Scanning

“Reflective” scanning refers to scans of 2d media like paintings, photographs, illustrations, etc. Our two scanner options offer different capabilities to suit a variety of scanning needs.

V850 Basic Scan

Flatbed scanning provides high-quality options for both transparent and reflective materials.

(For 9”x10” media and smaller)

Basic scans: $7.50 per scan

  • Epson Perfection V850 Pro Scanner: 9"x10" media and smaller. Default scan resolution of 900dpi

    • Automatic, In-scanner color inversion/crop

    • Automated dust removal

Overhead scans

Latitude’s Overhead Scanner process is an efficient solution for capturing color-accurate files that are reproducible at actual or larger sizes. Our Overhead Scanner allows for exceptional image quality, maximum file size, and accurate color reproduction.

Scans all manner of 2D objects such as:

  • Drawings/Illustrations

  • Photographic Prints

  • Painted Canvases

  • Polaroids/Family Photos

  • Fabric Swatches/Embroidery 

Pricing (per object to be scanned):

Maximum size of any object to be scanned 16”x24”

10” on Short Dimension and Smaller: $40

10.1” - 13” on Short Dimension: $60

13” - 16” on Short Dimension: $80

Match Artist Original for Print: +$50 (not including the cost of printing)

If your object to be scanned is larger than 16"x24" it may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Please contact LATITUDE prior to your submission for any objects to be scanned larger than 16"x24"

All scanning options will be “Enhanced”, including dusting at 50% magnification and as large of a capture as possible.

Output File Sizes range from approximately 600MB to approximately 1.5GB depending on original size, stitching, etc.

Drum Scans

  • Drum scanners provide the very best possible scans of negatives and transparencies regarding sharpness, color density, and tonal information.

    Basic Drum Scans:

    8mm to 4x5:  $66 per negative 

    5x7: $95 per negative

    8x10: $165 per negative

    Enhanced Drum Scans:

    8mm to 4x5:  $95 per negative 

    5x7:  $150 per negative

    8x10:$200 per negative

    For Basic Scans:

    • All scans are 16-bit Linear Scans.

    • Dusting is not included with Basic Drum Scans

    • All scans are carefully inspected for sharpness and tonal depth

    • Negatives are manually inverted using Negative Lab Pro based on film brand.

    • Scans are produced to a TIFF files in a positive state with standardized settings

    • Color casts are not corrected, for further post-production consider the Enhanced option

      Scan Sizes per format will be:

    • 35mm: 8000dpi

    • 120: 5000dpi

    • 4x5: 3200dpi

    • 8x10: 2000dpi

      For Enhanced Drum Scans:

      • All scans are 16-bit Linear Scans.

      • Dusting (white dust and air bubbles) is manually performed at 50% magnification, and all scans are carefully inspected for sharpness and tonal depth

      • All scans are carefully inspected for sharpness and tonal depth

      • Negatives are manually inverted. Inversion settings can be specified if desired.

      • Scans are produced to a RAW positive state with adjustments made specific to the film stock.

      • Color casts are addressed according to the film brand’s native characteristics.

      • UPCHARGE For scans above the following markers, Enhanced scans are charged for above: $25 per scan

      • 35mm: 8000dpi

      • 120: 5000dpi

      • 4x5: 3200dpi

      • 8x10: 2000dpi

      Typical 7-10 business day turnaround from film drop-off time for up to 4 negatives. Larger orders have longer turnaround times. We are fully equipped to handle bulk jobs with longer time tables, please email keanna@latitudechicago.org for details.

Scans starting at $30.00

Capture Scans

  • Capture Film Scanner: Scans 35mm to 4x5” film negatives or positives with a maximum optical resolution of 6000x4000 pixels at 300dpi.

    35mm:  $30 per negative

    120:  $35 per negative

    4x5:  $45 per negative

    • Linear Scan / color interpretation

    • Negatives are inverted in Negative Lab Pro and sent in a TIFF format

    • Manual dust removal at 50%

    • Film edge cannot be included

Code of Ethics

The safety of LATITUDE Staff and community members is important to us. Physical, emotional,  and mental harm, harassment, and/or discriminatory practices by a DIY User will not be tolerated for any reason. Harassment means any unwelcome conduct on the basis of an individual's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, marital status, order of protection status, disability, military status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, unfavorable discharge from military service, citizenship status, or work authorization status that has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with the individual's work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment. Harassment is not limited to occurring in the physical location where you perform your job duties. When discussing disabilities, it is important to note that disability status should not be assumed, as not all disabilities are observed visually, and even something that appears to be an obvious disability may not be a disability as defined by law. Discriminatory practices include aggressive language or actions towards communities of color, artists with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQIIA+. Some examples of harm or abuse are: inappropriate or aggressive language conveyed verbally or written, harassment, stalking, unwanted physical contact, unwanted sexual advances of any kind, and physical harm with the use of a weapon. If a LATITUDE Staff member determines a DIY User is causing harm or abuse to themselves, harassing, or engaging with discriminatory practices LATITUDE Staff, LATITUDE volunteers, and/or fellow DIY Users, LATITUDE Staff reserves the right to remove this DIY user from the space immediately and evaluate the health of the working relationship between LATITUDE and the DIY User prior to future reservation(s) being made. A review process will begin after removal evaluating the safety of staff and community members. If a Code of Conduct breach occurs, the Board of LATITUDE will be notified and an incident report approved by the Executive will be kept on file.  Additional steps, measures, or assessments may be required of a DIY User to regain access to LATITUDE’s facilities, services, and programs in the event of any breach of the Code of Conduct.


LATITUDE strives to maintain a safe and friendly environment for everyone within the space. All DIY Users are expected to adhere to this Code of Conduct with respect to the equipment and facilities as well as LATITUDE Staff, LATITUDE volunteers, and all persons within it. All DIY Users have read and understood the LATITUDE DIY User Agreement and agree to be bound by its terms.
