October 2015 Artist in Residency: Cecil McDonald Jr.

With a new month comes a new artist in residence! Welcome, Cecil McDonald Jr.! Cecil will be with us throughout October as he continues work begun during a recent residency at the Chicago Cultural Center through the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). We're also hoping to convince him to start drum scanning....

More formally: Cecil McDonald, Jr. explores the intersections of masculinity, familial relations, and the artistic and intellectual pursuits of black culture, particular as this culture informs and intersects with the larger culture.  McDonald studied fashion, house music and dance club culture before receiving a MFA in Photography at Columbia College Chicago, where he currently serves as an adjunct professor and a teaching artist at the Center for Community Arts Partnership at Columbia College Chicago. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, with works in the permanent collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art, Chicago Bank of America LaSalle Collection and the Harris Bank Collection. He has been awarded a Joyce Foundation Midwest Voices & Visions Award, an Artadia Award, a 3Arts Teaching Artist Award, and a residency through The Swiss Benevolent Society, in Lucerne, Switzerland.

If you're interested in scheduling a studio visit with Cecil, please see the Calendar page of our site and get in touch with him to setup a meeting!
